The city of Shelton will sponsor a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Shelton Highway Department garage, 41 Myrtle St.
Myrtle Street is between Howe Avenue and Riverdale Avenue downtown, near Route 8.
Accepted will be items such as paint, stains, paint strippers, fuels, antifreeze, driveway sealer, insecticides, fertilizers, rubber cement, photo chemicals, floor polish, drain cleaner and swimming pool chemicals.
(Story continues below)
Note: The day of the collection was mistakenly listed as Oct. 20 in the recently-published 2013 Shelton Answerbook. The correct date this year is Saturday, Oct. 5. We regret the error and any confusion it may have caused.
Not being accepted are trash, propane cylinders, fire extinguishers, ammunition, fireworks, explosives, smoke detectors, prescription medicines, and commercial or industrial waste.
(A more complete list of what to bring and what not to bring appears later in this article.)
Proof of residency required
Proof of Shelton residency will be required at the collection. The collection is being handled by MXI Environmental Services.
For information call the Shelton Highway Department at 203-924-9277.
Transporting items safely
To transport items safely to the collection site, people should leave materials in original containers while tightening caps and lids. Chemicals should never be mixed.
People should sort and pack separately — oil paint, pesticides, and household cleaners.
Containers should be packed in sturdy, upright boxes that are padded with newspaper. Pack the car and drive directly to the collection site. People should never smoke while handling or transporting hazardous material.
