Alexa Merriam and Joe Stein from Shelton High were two of 16 student-athletes from eight high schools named The SportsCenter of Connecticut/Southern Connecticut Conference Scholar Athletes of the Month for October.
A cross country and outdoor track standout for the Gaelettes, Merriam has been an exceptional performer in the classroom, where she sports an 98.88 grade point average, which ranks her third in her class. Merriam has received numerous academic awards, including Advanced CAPT Scholar and AP Scholar.
She is involved in many school activities, including the SHS After Hours Chorus Assistant Director, Poetry Club co-editor, and the Diversity Dream Team.
Shelton girls cross country coach Katelyn Botsford said:
“Alexa embodies the picture perfect notion of a student-athlete. A member of the varsity team who runs competitive times, her ranking of third in the class is astounding, considering the amount of advanced placement courses she takes and the fact that she has added responsibilities in the music department as student director.”
A three-sport captain (soccer, swimming, outdoor track) for the Gaels, Stein has been a model student in the classroom, where he currently ranks second in his class with an exemplary 99.49 grade point average.
Stein is an Advanced CAPT Scholar, AP Scholar, and is a member of the National and Spanish honor societies.
School activities he is
involved with include the Gael Winds Newspaper and Best Buddies, where he is the Treasurer.
Shelton boys soccer coach Joe D’Auria said:
“Joe is a very determined individual, one who is always seeking success on and off the field. His leadership skills shine tremendously, so much that opposing coaches often compliment his leadership skills.”
Now in its seventh year, The SportsCenter of Connecticut/SCC Scholar Athlete of the Month program will honor outstanding young men and women each month during the 2012-13 academic year.
