Grapplers ready for SCCs

The Shelton High wrestling team will host the Southern Connecticut Conference Championships on Saturday with wrestling getting under way at 9 a.m.

Coach Bill Maloney’s Gaels took a 14-9 record into their last dual meet with Jonathan Law on Wednesday night.

Freshman Kyle McGinnis, junior Nick Pogascas, junior Liam Cummings and senior Mac Thompson should be the top seeds for Shelton at the SCC meet.

McGinnis is 31-7 at 113 pounds, Pogascas is 31-13 at 145, Cummings is 31-10 at 160 and Thompson is 25-12 in the 182-pound weight class.

Also counted on to earn team points in the lower weights will be freshman Nico DiStasio (14-13) at 106 pounds, sophomore Scott Plucenik (19-22) at 120, freshman Jake Litts (5-18) at 126 and sophomore Darwin Delgado (5-21) at 132.

Senior captain Mike Chernesky (18-21) will wrestle at 138, with freshman Rich Pogascas (5-15) at 152 and junior Carlos Barranco (9-19) at 170.

In the upper weights, senior captain Will Dimeo (21-17) is at 195 pounds, followed by junior Alex Merdinger (24-15) at 220 and junior Jose Nieves (12-18) in the heavyweight division.

Thompson set a state record with a seven-second pin in his 182-pound weight class, and Shelton defeated Staples of Westport, 65-18, on Jan. 29.

McGinnis (1:35 at 120 pounds), Pogascas (1:49 at 152) and Barranco (1:05 at 170) joined Thompson in winning by fall.

Chernesky won by 16-0 technical fall .

Shelton also defeated Norwich Free Academy, 37-35, and Fairfield Prep, 44-28.
