Eugene J. McCarthy, age 86, of Stratford, CT, beloved husband of Gail (Cook) McCarthy, passed away on June 30, 2017.
Mr. McCarthy was born October 25, 1930 in Derby, CT.
He was a graduate of Shelton High School and a veteran of the Navy. He received an A.S. degree from Quinnipiac, a B.S. from UCONN, and an M.S. from Central Connecticut State University. He taught business education in Torrington, Shelton, Trumbull, and Stratford. At Trumbull High School, Gene started the school’s first “data processing” computer science program. In a second career, Gene was a Wage Enforcement Agent for the CT Labor Department where he helped workers recover unpaid wages. After his retirement, Gene had a regularly scheduled program on CRIS Radio for the blind and organized the CROP walk for the town of Stratford. In addition, he served on multiple boards at the First Congregational Church of Stratford. Gene loved music and sang in the church choir.
In addition to his wife, Gene is survived by his three daughters: Pam McCarthy-Hudson (Bill) of San Mateo, CA; Patricia Kirsten (Gerd) of Hofheim, Germany; and Robin Arehart (Alan) of Torrance, CA; and by his four grandchildren: Arthur Kirsten, Nick Hudson, Louise Kirsten, and Renee Arehart. He is also survived by his nephew Michael McCarthy of Montana and nieces Kelly Onori and Donna Yap of California.
Gene was predeceased by his parents, Eugene and Gladys (Catlin) McCarthy and by his brother Donald McCarthy.
Friends and family are invited to attend calling hours from 3-5:00 pm on Friday, July 21, at the Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road, Shelton. In addition, friends and family are invited to a memorial service in Gene’s honor at 11:00 am on Saturday, July 22, at the First Congregational Church of Stratford, followed by a luncheon in Packard Hall.
The family wishes to acknowledge Harbor Memory Care at Middlebrook Farms, Bridgeport Hospital, and Vitas Hospice staff for their care and compassion during the final stages of Gene’s illness.
