Child bicyclist struck by car ‘conscious and showing signs of improvement’

A 12 year-old bicyclist is “conscious and showing signs of improvement after he was hit by a vehicle while riding his bike without a helmet in a Shelton intersection on Thursday, July 20 at around 6:30 p.m.

The Shelton Police Department received several 911 calls reporting a 12 year old male on a bicycle was stuck by a motor vehicle at the intersection of Maltby and Gilbert Street in Shelton early Thursday night.

Shelton police and EMS responded and the child was treated at the scene before being transported to Yale New Haven hospital for serious injuries. The child is currently in critical condition.

The operator of the vehicle was Monika O’Toole, 34, of Oxford. O’Toole was not injured in the accident and stayed on scene and cooperated with investigators, according to Detective Richard Bango of the Shelton Police.

Due to the serious injuries sustained by the child, the Shelton Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team was called to investigate. Anyone who witnessed the accident or has any information is urged to contact the Shelton Police Department at 203-924-1544.
