Courtney Litts and Andrew Cordes have been named Shelton High’s Fall Blanchette Sporting Goods Southern Connecticut Conference Scholar Athletes.
A varsity soccer captain with a class rank of four in a senior class of 326 and a grade-point-average of 4.58, Litts has earned spots on the Southern Connecticut Conference All-Division soccer squad and the SCC All-Academic All-Star team.
A team manager on the wrestling team and sophomore and junior class vice president, Litts is a member of the World Language Italian Honor Society, the SHS Honor Roll, the National Honor Society, the CT State Science Fair, the Italian Club, the Student Council, Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership, the Quill & Scroll Honor Society, the Drama Club and is Editor-in-Chief of the Gael Magazine.
An SHS Student of the Month, Litts is a CIAC Class Act Sportsmanship Chair and the CT Stockholm Junior Water Prize winner.
“Courtney has shown herself to be a consummate leader in our program,” Shelton High girls soccer coach Marvin Miller said. “She has a vision for the program and ensures all her energies are directed to achieving that vision.
“She embraces our values of pride, spirit and excellence every day in training and in games. She is always prepared, both as an individual and as a leader, ensuring her teammates are focused, motivated and ready to take the field.
“Courtney understands that leadership is about serving her teammates and she has done a remarkable job this season doing that.”
A starter of the Shelton boys soccer and wrestling teams, Cordes has a class rank of 24 and a grade-point-average of 4.17.
The Gael soccer team’s Scholar Athlete and on the SCC All-Academic team, Cordes is a member of the World Language Spanish Honor Society, the SHS Honor Roll, the National Honor Society, a National Merit Scholar, an AP Scholar w/honors, a University of Rochester Science Award winner and volunteers at Camp Sunshine.
“Andrew is an extremely dedicated, hard-working student-athlete,” said Shelton High boys soccer coach. “He leads by example on and off the field. He’s been a pleasure to coach.”
The SCC Scholar Athlete of the Month program is sponsored by Blanchette Sporting Goods and recognizes student athletes who have a minimum of a B (3.0) overall and earn a varsity letter.
Student athletes also must demonstrate leadership qualities by being a positive role model both on and off the field and show commitment to self-improvement and put their team before themselves.
