Elected officials sworn in at Senior Center

Mark Holden, Kate Kutash, Jose Goncalves, Dr. Darlissa Ritter, Kathy Yolish, Amanda Kilmartin, Dave Gioiello, Anne Gaydos and Tom Minotti stood before a judge, their families and colleagues on Tuesday, Nov. 21, to be sworn in as the city’s newest Board of Education members.

Shelton’s most recent group of elected officials were sworn in to their positions on city boards and commissions and into office on Tuesday, Nov. 21, at the community’s senior center.

After being sworn in for the 14th time himself, Mayor Mark Lauretti thanked all in attendance and the elected officials for the responsibility they’ve accepted. He attributed much of the city’s success over the past 25 years to its government’s ability to make decisions.

“Yes, disagreements occur all of the time, but at the end of the day, the decision-making process is what’s important. The end result is even more important, because it has a tremendous impact on people’s lives,” said Lauretti. “I’m always brought back to where we began back in 1991 and why. Really nothing has changed. It was that same rationale, thought process, and drive that brought us here and is what motivates us now.

“We are in a place a lot of people want to be, and we are very fortunate to be here,” Lauretti said in closing.

After Lauretti’s remarks, the city’s Board of Aldermen re-elected Third Ward Alderman John Anglace as its president and Second Ward Alderman Eric McPherson as its vice president, before holding its first meeting.

The city’s school board will meet in a special session on Wednesday, Nov. 29, to assign roles to specific members. According to reports, Mark Holden, the board chair since 2012, is hoping to be re-elected.

The new school board is composed of five Republicans and four Democrats, seven of them incumbents. Amanda Kilmartin joined the board to fill Arlene Liscinsky’s vacancy this fall. Returning to the board are Holden, David Gioiello, Kate Kutash, Thomas Minotti, Dr. Darlissa Ritter, and Kathy Yolish. The board welcomed new members Jose Goncalves and Anne Gaydos.
