TONIGHT–Shelter Ridge developers look to gain approval of Inland Wetlands

An application for the much-discussed Shelter Ridge development will appear before the city’s Inland Wetlands Commission on Thursday, Jan. 11, at 7 p.m. in City Hall.

The application appearing before Inland Wetlands, which was filed on Dec. 21, 2017, says the 121-acre development would disturb 0.06 of the property’s 3.56 acres of wetland.

Shelton’s Planning and Zoning Commission approved the development that would stretch across part of Bridgeport Avenue, Mill Street and Buddington Road back in March 2017.

The P&Z’s approval of the Shelter Ridge application led to a lawsuit being filed by a group of residents looking to have the ruling overturned in order to protect the city from “over development” and instead consider more “responsible developments.”

The lawsuit, which was filed by John and Judith Tillman of Mill Street, who live approximately 100 feet from the would-be development, states that Shelter Ridge would not only disturb some of the city’s remaining greenspace but would also decrease their property value.

To date, the organized group opposed to Shelter Ridge and overdevelopment, known as Save Our Shelton, has raised $30,000 via a GoFundMe account to help pay for a lawyer for the case.

According to SOS’s Facebook page, the group is still looking for help to pay the bill.

We are so grateful for your support over the last two years, and now we are asking you for your help once more at a time of desperate need. Even though the PDD for Shelter Ridge on Bridgeport Avenue is still in the court system, the developers and their lawyer have decided to take Shelter Ridge to Shelton’s Inland Wetlands to seek approval for the plan. On less than one week’s notice, we have to fight this development on another front. We have some money raised, but we need to raise an additional $10,000 to have enough for a first-round fight at wetlands. We are fighting for you, but we need your help. … We need to have all donations sent NO LATER THAN FEB. 1. At that point, we will make our best plan with the money we have on hand.”

Shelter Ridge would be a long-term project that encompasses both residential units and retail space — 375 “upscale” apartments and 300,000 square feet of retail space.
