Trinity Lutheran Church makes donation to Spooner House

Pastor Derk-Michel Strauch, and church members Diane Rivers, Kristine Bourret, Ally O’Donnell, Sherry O’Donnell prepare to donate 575 needed items to Spooner House.

As part of its commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017, Trinity Lutheran Church on Howe Ave. wanted to make a donation of 500 items to a local cause. We decided to donate 500 wish list items to Spooner House. To help achieve that goal and as a form of community outreach, the church held two celebratory events during the fall of 2017.  In October, it showed Rick Steeves’ film on the Reformation, followed by a German dinner.  Then, in November, it hosted a concert featuring organ, piano, handbells, flute and cello, followed by a reception.

Both events were open to the public and free of charge. During both events the church collected freewill offerings to use toward its donation to Spooner House.  Both of these events were organized and presented by members of the congregation and received financial backing through mini grants from Thrivent Financial. Using the freewill offerings from these events and donations from members of the congregation, we were able to purchase and deliver almost 600 items to Spooner House the week before Christmas.  The church gave food and pantry items, cleaning and personal care products, boxes of diapers, and many office supplies, including printer cartridges.
