The Shelton girls basketball team closed out the regular-season portion of its schedule on Monday night, losing to Amity Regional, 49-35, in Woodbridge.
Both Southern Connecticut Conference teams will begin their play-off schedule with a game on Thursday night against a team yet to determined. The Spartans have one regular-season game remaining on Tuesday at Guilford.
After falling behind early and trailing, 12-5, after one quarter, the Gaelettes used a full-court zone press to get back in the game and drew to within 21-16 when sophomore guard Leya Vohra (9 points) scored with 2:16 remaining in the quarter.
But the Spartans (10-9) got a pair of foul shots from Carly Marchitto and a 3-pointer right before the half to lead 26-16 at intermission.
Shelton (8-12) never got closer than nine points in the second half.
Amity was paced by 15 points from Tara Laugeni, a junior forward, and Marchitto who had nine.
“We just made too many mistakes, many of them at key points in the game,” said Shelton coach Joe Cavallaro. “Defense has been our strong suit all season long, and we did a decent job of playing it tonight. Our shooting, however, (the Gaels were 12-of 48 for 25 percent) really hurt us.”
