Students excel in Shelton High School science fair

Winners at the annual Shelton High School science fair show their awards.

 

The annual science fair was held at Shelton High School, where 391 students submitted more than 230 projects.

On Feb. 6 the fair was organized by the Shelton High School Science Department. Members from various community corporations, universities, retired educators, science teachers in the district, and members of the Shelton Board of Education Central Office served as judges for the day.

They communicated with students about their projects and projects findings. The awards assembly was held on Feb. 7, in the school’s auditorium. Dr. Beth Smith, headmaster, and Mark Holden, Shelton Board of Education chairperson, awarded certificates, plaques and cash prizes.

 

First place

—Ecological Outlook on the Effects of Pollution on Dissolved Oxygen in Seawater (Dylan Smith, Wesley Kocurek, and Scott Shnipes)

—An Automatic Unsupervised Detection of Alzheimer’s Disease From MRI Scans Using Diffeomorphism, Principal Component Analysis, and Artificial Neural Networks (Rigel Mahmood)

—Boosting Ethanol’s Heat Production (Alessandra Boisvert)

—What Affects Memory More- color or Shape? ( Keyur Shah)

—People and Political Belief…is There Bias? (Tal Shashoua, Brianna Sasson, and Kai-Xan McDonald)

—The Effects of Concentrated Drugs on Heart Rate (Neel Swamy)

—Bottling Seals (Carolyn Rennie and Annita Alvarado)

Will participate in state science fair

The following eight projects were overall winners and will participate in the Connecticut State Science Fair at Quinnipiac University in March:

Overall winner and prizes

Rigel Mahmood was congratulated for submitting the number one project in the Shelton High science fair that won the entire fair. More than $1,500 in prize money was awarded with monetary donations from Mayor Mark Lauretti and the Shelton High School PTSO.
