The Shelton High School Athletic Department and the Southern Connecticut Conference have announced that the Spring 2018 Shelton High School Blanchette’s Sporting Goods SCC Scholar Athletes are Alex Ruenhorst and Victoria Kostour.
With a 3.8 grade point average, Ruenhorst is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society, the Foreign Language National Honor Society, and the Quill and Scroll National Honors Society. He is sports editor of Gael Magazine and volunteers at both the New Haven Open Tennis Tournament and the Boys and Girls Club of the Lower Naugatuck Valley.
Ruenhorst has played No. 1 singles all four years for the Gaels, earning All-Southern Connecticut Conference honors each season.
Last spring, he was the fourth-seeded player in Class LL, where he advanced to the semifinals before dropping a 7-6 (5) 6-3 decision to eventual state champion and No. 1 seed Evan Felcher from Staples of Westport.
Ruenhorst, the 2017 SCC Player of the Year, is a Top 20 USTA ranked junior in New England and is is Top 5 USTA ranked junior in Connecticut honors, awards and memberships.
He is a Wendy’s High School Heisman Awardee in 2018.
“It’s a tremendous honor and privilege to coach Alex and I strongly believe he’s deserving of being named SCC Scholar Athlete,” said Shelton boys tennis coach Kevin McCue. “On top of his unbelievable tennis skill he has been a great teammate to his peers and encourages them to play hard and challenge themselves for the better each and every day at practice and at matches.”
Kosteur is second in her class of 325 with a 4.64 grade point average. Vice-president of the Spanish National Honor Society, she is a member of the National Honor Society, winner of the SHS World Language Department Award Spanish lV, the Columbia Book Award, and the SHS Math Department Award-Best Work 2017.
Kosteur is captain of the girls tennis team and earned a spot on the All-SCC team. She is a four-year member of the Shelton Marching Gaels and a graduate of the Ukrainian School of Stamford.
“Vicky along with being an incredible scholar athlete for the SHS tennis team is also an incredible role model for her teammates,” Shelton girls tennis coach Michelle Sedlock said. “She leads by example and has been a wonderful young lady to coach. She carries herself with much dignity and enthusiasm as a student of Shelton High School.”
The SCC Scholar Athlete of the Month program is sponsored by Blanchette’s Sporting Goods and recognizes student athletes who have a minimum of a B (3.0) overall and earn a varsity letter.
Student athletes also demonstrate leadership qualities by being a positive role model both on and off the field and show commitment to self-improvement and put their team before themselves.
