Gael grapplers post wins at Open

Shelton High’s Mac Thompson and Liam Cummings qualified for the State Open that ran from Feb. 22-23 at the Floyd Little Athletic Center.

Coach Bill Maloney’s Gaels finished with 10 team points, tying for 55th place overall.

Danbury High won the team title with 130 points, followed by Windham (121), South Windsor (121) and New Milford (93.5).

Thompson won his first-round bout at 182 pounds, pinning Marcus Slivinski of Plainville in 1:40.

He then took eventual champion Colin Grim from Ledyard to the wire, before losing a 6-4 minor decision to the Class M champion.

Thompson then fell to Austin Sullivan of Southington, 8-0, in the consolation bracket.

At 160, Cummings edged Bethel’s Victor Viera, 5-2, in their first-round bout.

Juan Garcia of Danbury won by fall over Cummings in 2:37 in round two, knocking the Gael junior into the losers’ bracket.

Cummings pinned C.J. Delgrosse of Avon in 54 seconds in consolations, before clipping Jordan Kenyon of Fitch-Groton, 3-1.

Up next was Brandon Fulco of Trumbull, with Fulco advancing via a 9-4 victory.
