Obituary: Donald Edward Hanichak, 62, former independent contractor, traveler

Donald Edward Hanichak, 62, of Shelton, formerly of Stratford, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family at Bridgeport Hospital on December 15, 2012.

Son of the late Edward and Stella Hanichak, he was born March 19, 1950.

Don graduated from Trumbull High School. Prior to his illness, he was an independent contractor.

Don was a happy person who never lost his kind disposition despite the stroke that left him wheelchair bound for 10 years. When young he was an avid skier and horseback rider. Later, Don traveled extensively in the U.S. and Caribbean.

Besides Connecticut, Don lived in New York, Michigan, North Carolina and Virginia. His happiest times were spent with family and friends who miss him greatly.

Immediate survivors include: sister, Dolores Brown; sons Donald D. and Jonathan Hanichak, daughters Christine and Carolyn Hanichak; also a granddaughter Adria Clanton, grandson Andrew Hanichak, step daughter Lillian Smith and three step granddaughters Amanda, Megan, & Lauren Smith among many other relatives.

Don was a loving man who enjoyed working with his hands. He was an optimist with great ideas some unconventional, but persistently saw each through. He made new friends easily always being able to share a smile or laugh. Never forgotten to all who got to know him!

Don will be lovingly remembered around his 63rd birthday on Sunday, March 17, 2013 1pm at Stratford Baptist Church across from Paradise Green 131 Huntington Rd. Stratford, CT All acquaintances welcome.
