Accident causes major backup on Route 8 south in Shelton

Traffic was backed up on Route 8 southbound just north of the Exit 11 off-ramp in the early evening Monday. But as of 7:40 p.m. — more than an hour after the incident — traffic was moving normally again on the highway.

A silver-colored sedan appears to have gone off the road to the right and hit a large rock ledge on the side, before parts of it — such as the front bumper — were torn off the vehicle and into pieces. The car apparently then traveled back into the road, where it came to a stop and backed up traffic.

One lane of southbound traffic had remained moving past the scene after the accident. Heading south, Exit 11 is for lower Bridgeport Avenue.

Appears no one was injured

State Police arrived at the scene and there didn’t appear to have been any injuries. Troopers could be seen questioning an individual who, according to one witness at the scene, was the sedan’s owner.

It’s unclear if another car was involved in the accident but another vehicle was on parked the side of the road, with the occupants speaking to police.
