A well-known animal rights group, PETA, is offering a $2,500 reward for help in finding whoever killed the pet snake at the Huntington Branch Library in Shelton.

The Creamsicle-colored corn snake, Peaches, was a beloved fixture of the Huntington Branch Library in Shelton. The snake endured chemical burns and kidney damage for a week before dying from injuries after it appears someone poured Goof Off cleaning solvent into her tank around March 18.

Peaches was “the nicest, friendliest snake,” her former guardian told news sources. “She didn’t deserve to die and she definitely didn’t deserve to suffer the way she did.”

Who to contact with information

Police have yet to make any arrests in connection with the fatal attack on Peaches. That’s why PETA is offering up to $2,500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this crime.

Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to contact Shelton Police Det. Richard Bango at 203-924-1544.

PETA officials said they are offering the reward because it “might be the only way to apprehend those responsible for this heinous act.”

‘Animal abusers are cowards’

According to PETA Director Martin Mersereau, “Animal abusers are cowards. They take their issues out on the most defenseless beings available to them.”

Mersereau said local residents should be concerned about the perpetrator because those who harm animals often also commit other terrible acts. “According to law-enforcement agencies and leading mental-health professionals, perpetrators of violent acts against animals are often repeat offenders who pose a serious threat to all animals — including humans,” Mersereau said.
