Certificates of appreciation were given to 230 Korean War-era veterans from Shelton and other Valley towns during a ceremony Tuesday evening at American Legion Post No. 16 in Shelton.

The certificates, issued by the U.S. Defense Department, thank the veterans for their service to the country during the war on the Korean peninsula from 1950 to 1953.

About 125 people attended the ceremony, including spouses and other family members, and the other certificates will be distributed to veterans through their local veterans posts. The names of all recipients were read aloud at the event.

Some of the veterans saw active combat, while others were based at military bases around the world in supportive roles while the war was taking place.

Served ‘when called upon’

“You offered your services to your country when called upon — and did what you were asked to do,” said Alphonse Sabetta of Shelton, a Korean War veteran and adjutant of the Shelton American Legion post. Sabetta helped organize the event.

Major Guillermo Canedo, a Marine based at the Pentagon who serves on the Defense Department’s 60th Anniversary of the Korean War Commemoration Committee, handed the certificates to the local veterans who were in attendance.

The Defense Department certificates of appreciation were distributed inside these decorative covers.

Canedo said Korean War-era veterans have never received the recognition they deserve for their role in what many people call “The Forgotten War,” coming five years after the end of World War II.

“This will right a wrong of a long time ago,” Canedo said.
