Baseball: West Haven storms past Shelton (Updated)

The West Haven High baseball team exploded for six runs in the third inning, helping the Westies cruise to a 12-3 SCC interdivision win over Shelton at Whitey Piurek Field on Friday.

Cameron Stone led the charge at the plate for West Haven, which improved to 6-5 overall, with two hits and three runs batted in. Gary Donovan added three hits and one RBI and Joe Sette two hits, one run scored and one RBI.

West Haven pounded out 12 hits in total— including five of the extra-base variety. The biggest base hit came in the decisive third, when Stone’s single to center field was misplayed into a bases-clearing, three-base error.

The offensive outburst resulted in more than enough support for right-hander Tyler Gambardella, threw a complete game for the Westies.

He allowed five hits and struck out seven, improving his personal mark to 3-2. Gambardella also helped himself at the plate, tripling and a scoring a run.

Vin Backert (3-1) took the loss on the mound for Shelton, as the Gaels fell to 7-5 overall.

Hudson Boles had two hits, while Patrick Murphy singled and scored a run.

Holding a 1-0 edge after Nick Price singled and scored on an error by third baseman Justin Lynch, the Westies blew the game open in the home half of the third.

Gambardella lashed a lead-off triple to deep center field, before Jason Wilkerson walked and stole second base. After Backert walked Mike Brand on a 3-2 pitch, Stone followed by hammering a sinking liner to center field.

The ball skidded under the glove of Marcello Ursini, rolling to the fence and allowing all three runs to score. Two batters later, a dropped popup allowed Matt Carter to reach base.

Donovan extended the inning with a double, before Ricky Balzano hit a two-run single to center to push the score to 7-0.

Backert sandwiched a pair of fly balls around a walk to Gambardella, but the damage was done.

Shelton pulled back a run in the top of the fourth, when Backert drew a two-out walk and scored on Boles’ pinch-hit single to center field.

Run-scoring singles by Stone and Donovan made it 9-1 in the bottom of the fourth.

Murphy and Tice led off the fifth with consecutive singles, and Tice’s base hit was misplayed by Wilkerson for a run-scoring, three-base error.

Mike Cowell’s RBI groundout made it 9-3, before Gambardella struck out pinch hitter John Michelson and retired Ryan Testani on an infield pop.

West Haven tacked on two more runs in the fifth, before Balzano’s RBI single in the sixth provided the final scoreline of 12-3.

Shelton posted a 9-1 victory at Branford on April 24.

Cowell went the distance for his second win, as he limited the Hornets (5-7) to three hits.

Tice had three hits and three RBIs, C.J. Rizzo a three-run triple and a single, and Murphy had two hits.

The Gaels return to action today at 4:15, when they travel to Cheshire to face the Rams (4-6, 1-3) in a Housatonic Division matchup.
