Shelton High senior Vincent Backert recently committed to play Division III baseball for the New England College Pilgrims in Henniker, N.H.
Backert is an honor student and CAPT scholar at Shelton High and will major in biology at NEC.
“I’m really happy to be going to NEC,” Backert said. “They have the right academic program for me and Coach Miller is giving me an opportunity to both play a position and pitch. I’ll have a chance to work hard and earn a lot of college baseball playing time.”
Backert’s baseball resume includes playing on four Connecticut state championship teams, one Northeast Regional runner-up team, The Connecticut Future Stars and Connecticut Xplosion AAU teams, and the Under Armour National team.
Currently a pitcher and third baseman for the Shelton Gaels, he holds a 17-3 pitching record for his high-school career. In 2011, he was the Junior Varsity MVP.
“The baseball program at New England College is very excited to have Vincent in the program for the fall of 2013,” NEC head baseball coach Jeff Miller said. “We strive to get players that are committed to their education and value the opportunity to play baseball at the college level.
“Vin is the type of young man that will excel on the baseball field and in the classroom. He fits the mold of the type of student athlete that we want in our program.
“We look for great things from Vin in his four-year college career.”
