North Haven eliminates Shelton in SCC quarters

Matt Oestreicher had three hits, including a home run, to power North Haven High to a 5-3 victory over Shelton High in the SCC baseball quarterfinals at DeMayo Field on Tuesday afternoon.

The fourth-seeded Indians pinned four runs on Gael starter Ryan Testani in the bottom of the first inning, with Oestreicher’s fifth-inning solo home run accounting for the final margin.

North Haven (13-8) advances to face top-seeded Xavier High of Middletown on Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Quigley Stadium in West Haven in the SCC semifinals. The earlier semifinal at 4 p.m. will see second-seeded Amity High of Woodbridge face third-seeded Fairfield Prep.

Zach Brown won the quarterfinal matchup for North Haven in relief of starter Chandler Andrewsen, while Mike Acampora nailed down the save with two scoreless innings. Testani pitched a complete-game six-hitter, but was tagged with the loss.

Vin Backert and Michael Ficano had run-scoring hits for the Gaels (14-7). Shelton will return to action next Tuesday in the Class LL state tournament. Pairings will be released on Friday.
