Public can celebrate U.S. flag at Shelton ceremony

Shelton residents to serve as officers in local DAR chapter

The public is invited to attend a Flag Day ceremony Friday, June 14 at 11 a.m. at the Shelton Community Center courtyard, 41 Church St.

The Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will conduct the ceremony honoring the American flag.

In case of rain, the ceremony will take place in the community center’s second floor meeting room. Organizers said people of all ages are encouraged to participate in celebrating the symbol of U.S. freedom.

New officers, including Shelton residents, recently were elected to lead the local DAR chapter.

Officers of the Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter include Shelton residents Linda Tidrick (first vice regent), Lucille Wells (chaplain), Linda Papp (recording secretary), Pat King (treasurer), Mary Rozsa (registrar), Marge Estok (historian) and Barbara Wells (librarian).

An event also celebrated the accomplishments of Wells, the chapter’s regent since 2009.

Wells brought the chapter into the digital age by designing the chapter’s website, and her tenure was highlighted by the national DAR’s recognition of the chapter in researching and identifying the Revolutionary War patriots in the Huntington Burial Ground and celebrating Flag Day at the burial ground. Well is the state DAR’s Conservation Chairman.
