The Chaves Bakery Cardinals continued their successful baseball season against the Beechwood Supermarket Braves Wednesday evening at Kudej Field in Shelton, behind a six-hit, five-strikeout performance by 12 year old Michael Chaves.
The Cardinals, who won 8-3, were also fueled by the hitting of 12 year olds Alex Kozlowski, who was walked twice, stole two bases and scored two runs and Chaves, who had a single, one RBI, and a run scored.
For the 11 year olds, Colin St. Pierre had two singles, scored two runs and stole two bases, Santino DeFilippo singled and doubled, driving in two runs and scoring two runs, and Kevin Belden added a two-run single in the third inning to break open the game, while stealing a base and scoring a run.
The Cardinals really sparkled on defense, including a 1-6-3 double play turned by Chaves, Kozlowski and St. Pierre. There were also outstanding plays turned in by Belden, who made a sliding catch in center field to rob a hit; St. Pierre, who made a catch against the fence in foul territory at first base, and Zachary Kozlowski, who was a wall behind the plate and threw out two runners attempting to steal — including a player at second base for the final out of the game.
The Cardinals are currently 9-2 in league play.
