Police announce street closing due to fireworks show

During the fireworks show in downtown Shelton next week, a section of Howe Avenue will be closed beginning about an hour-and-a-half before the pyrotechnics display begins.

The fireworks will take place at dusk (about 9:15 p.m. or so) at Veterans at Memorial Park (the Riverwalk) on Wednesday, July 3.

Police officials said Howe Avenue from Wharf Street (next to the Route 8 overpass) to Center Street will be closed to regular traffic starting at 7:30 p.m. A bypass to get around that part of downtown will be set up for cars traveling on Route 110.

Night begins with 7 p.m. concert

The fireworks will be preceded by a 7 p.m. concert at the park. The Shelton show is coordinated with a fireworks display on the other side of the river by Derby.

People should try to find legal parking spaces in public lots and along streets, where appropriate.

Handicapped parking will be available in the municipal parking lot at Cornell and Canal streets, next to the Shelton Farmers Market.

If bad weather, people should call the Parks & Rec event info line at 203-331-4120 on Wednesday afternoon.

Up to 12,000 people attend

The annual Shelton fireworks display can attract from 10,000 to 12,000 spectators, said Shelton Police Sgt. Peter Zaksewicz, who oversees the department’s Traffic Division.

“This year we’re being told a lot of towns aren’t having fireworks so we expect there might be an even bigger crowd than usual,” Zaksewicz said.

The rain date for the Shelton fireworks is Friday, July 5.
