Connelly Construction ended the Ghostbusters’ season-opening eight-game winning streak with a dominating 19-1 triumph before the ’Busters bounced back with a come-from-behind 3-2 win in the nightcap to highlight the week’s action in the Valley Independent Softball League.
After trailing 2-0, the Ghostbusters (9-1, D2) tied things up with a pair in the fifth inning, before securing the victory on Tony Pettinella’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.
Winning pitcher Tom Bell scored the game-deciding tally.
Connelly (8-4, D2) took a pair of games from Microboard Processing, Inc. After thumping MPI 18-1 in the opener, Connelly fell behind 4-1 early in the nightcap, before taking charge with a six-run third and then pulling away to a 16-4 triumph.
MPI (0-8, D3) got 3-for-3 efforts from Rob Rodriguez and Aric St. Germain and a pair of hits, including a triple, from Jorge Rivera.
Bar 140 (6-4, D1) dominated Kut-Rite Hair Shop in both ends of their doubleheader, 13-1 and 13-0.
In the opener, Bar 140 took a 3-0 lead in the first, made it 6-0 in the third and then broke things open with a five-run fourth.
Phil Mrazik went 3-for-3, including a triple, and drove in three runs to lead the victors’ offense.
Winning pitcher Mike Benoit also went 3-for-3, while Chris Chapman banged out three hits and Tom Ballaro, Joe Czarnecki and Ant Santacroce two apiece. Craig Chapman backed up Benoit’s six-hit pitching with some good glovework at third base.
Taking a 2-0 lead in the first, making it 5-0 in the third, Bar 140 then ensured their 13-0 nightcap win with a six-run fourth.
Czarnecki had three triples, as he went 4-for-4 while driving in four runs. Mrazik completed a perfect night with another 3-for-3 performance, that included a home run.
Pat Moriarty also went 3-for-3, while Ballaro, Benoit and winning pitcher Mike Osiecki contributed two base hits apiece.
Mrazik also stood out defensively, playing the middle man in Bar 140’s five-man infield.
Zeroed through the first six innings, Jesse’s Barber Shop exploded for nine runs in its final turn at-bat to capture a 9-5 decision over Benanto Real Estate in the opener of their twin bill.
Jesse Schremmer banged out four hits, while Tony Lepri and Justin Barrett notched three apiece in support of winning pitcher Kevin Brown. Steve Tilki was best for the Realtors with three base hits.
Jesse’s staged another seventh-inning rally in the nightcap, but Benanto (5-5, D1) defused this one to preserve a 7-6 win.
Matt Thomas’ 3-for-3 performance, in which he homered and also drove in four runs, sparked the victors’ offense. Rob Piccirillo contributed three hits, while Schremmer had a like number for the Barbers.
Tom Soda earned the pitching win over Brown.
After jumping out to a 5-0 first inning lead to lay the foundation for a 12-5 win in the opener, Choice Design Remodelling (6-6, D3) completed a sweep of the Militia (3-7, D3) with an 18-4 triumph in the nightcap.
