Connecticut military veterans and several organizations supporting them will be honored at the Bridgeport Bluefish baseball game on Saturday, July 13 at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
During the third annual Homerun for Heroes, the Bluefish will play the Long Island Ducks. The game starts at 6:05 p.m. and will be preceded by special events. Gates will open at 5.
The Homerun for Heroes festivities begin at 5 p.m. with a Sikorsky helicopter fly-in, followed by pre-game activities, and on-field and between-inning events. There also will be a post-game fireworks display.
Three veterans groups to benefit
Proceeds from the evening will benefit the Connecticut Veterans Legal Center, Columbus House’s Homefront Initiative, and the Connecticut Fallen Heroes Foundation. Tickets cost $10 per seat for reserved seats and may be purchased at www.bridgeportbluefish.com.
Sikorsky Aircraft is the sponsor of Homerun for Heroes. “As an employer with nearly 3,000 veterans, we know firsthand the tremendous sacrifices they have made for our state and country,” said Mick Maurer, president of Sikorsky Aircraft.
Other event sponsors are United Technologies Corp. (Sikorsky’s parent company) and Teamsters Local 1150, representing union workers at Sikorsky facilities in Connecticut, Alabama and Florida.
‘An evening of fun and reflection’
Rocco Calo, secretary-treasurer of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 1150, said the union always look forward to supporting the annual event. “Homerun for Heroes is an evening of fun and reflection that honors our Connecticut military veterans and the vital organizations that support them,” Calo said.
Frank Boulton, principal/owner of the Bridgeport Bluefish, also is excited about the game and related activities. “It’s an event that brings the community together to say ‘thank you’ to all our Connecticut veterans,” Boulton said.
With donations expected from this year’s event, Homerun for Heroes will have raised nearly $90,000 for these military veterans support organizations.
