St. Vincent's named Best Hospital in Western Connecticut

St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport has been ranked as the Best Hospital in Fairfield County and in all of Western Connecticut for 2013-14 by U.S. News & World Report.

St. Vincent’s also is ranked No. 4 in the state, and was recognized as “high performing” in the specialty categories of Gastroenterology and GI Surgery; Geriatrics; Gynecology; Neurology and Neurosurgery; Pulmonology, and Urology.

St. Vincent’s President Stuart G. Marcus said the hospital’s doctors and employees do outstanding work. “We are extremely proud of our physicians and hospital staff who do their best every day to save lives and keep patient safety and the patient and family experience at the top of mind and top of heart,” Marcus said.

What the rankings mean

The annual U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings, now in the 24th year, recognize hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging patients.

“A hospital that emerges from our analysis as one of the best has much to be proud of,” said Avery Comarow, U.S. News health ranking editor.  “Only about 15% of hospitals are recognized for their high performance as among their region’s best.”

U.S. News publishes Best Hospitals to help guide patients who need a high level of care because they face particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition, or added risk because of other health problems or age. Objective measures such as patient survival and safety data, the adequacy of nurse staffing levels, and other data determine the rankings in most specialties.

Sixteen specialties are ranked

U.S. News evaluates hospitals in 16 adult specialties. The specialty rankings and data were produced for U.S. News by RTI International, a research organization based in North Carolina.

The rankings have been published at http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals and will appear in print in the U.S. News Best Hospitals 2014 guidebook, available in bookstores and on newsstands Aug. 27.
