DeLauro wants federal minimum wage of $10.10 an hour

With the fourth anniversary of the last time the national minimum wage was increased being on July 24, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro has called for raising the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour.

“We need to alleviate the severe financial pressures Americans face, particularly women, who make up two-thirds of minimum wage workers,” said DeLauro, a Democrat whose district includes part of Shelton.

The current national minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. In Connecticut, by state law, it is $8.25 an hour.

Wages are stagnant

“For four years, the federal minimum wage has remained stagnant, failing to keep up with the cost of living,” DeLauro said. “In fact, the real value of today’s minimum wage buys less than it did in 1956. With income inequality on the rise, it is long past time to give minimum wage workers a pay raise.”

Increasing the minimum wage would impact up to 30 million workers and, according to some studies, could help create 140,000 new jobs and boost the country’s economic growth by $33 billion, according to DeLauro.

She said when wages don’t keep up with the cost of living, more working families have to rely on government aid to make ends meet.

Co-sponsor of legislation

DeLauro is a co-sponsor of the Fair Minimum Wage Act, which would raise the minimum wage to $10.10 over the next three years, hike the tipped minimum wage, and tie future annual increases to the rate of inflation.

“Congress must increase the minimum wage so people can raise their incomes, support their families and have a chance for a better life,” she said.

Shelton has two members of Congress

The city of Shelton is divided between the Third District, represented by DeLauro, and the Fourth District, represented by fellow Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Himes.

DeLauro lives in New Haven and was first elected to Congress in 1990.
