Old theaters are focus at AARP meeting in Shelton

Shelton-Aarp-JayPoliLocal photographers Jay Misencik and Geralene Valentine, above, showed a video and spoke about the former Poli and Majestic theaters in Bridgeport during a meeting of the AARP chapter at the Shelton Senior Center.

They are looking to find people who have a personal connection to the downtown Bridgeport theaters, which still stand today but have been vacant for decades.

Valentine talked about the Byzantine decor, hand-painted frescoes, marble staircase and the two-story stained glass panel at the Majestic, which opened in 1922.

Misencik and Valentine live in Monroe and for many years operated a photo studio in Bridgeport.

Entertainer Eddie Cantor once remarked, “This is your theater, Bridgeport, be proud of it.”
