Foundation grants help community programs

The Valley Community Foundation (VCF) has awarded nearly $50,000 in one-year, smaller grants to 28 nonprofit and grassroots organizations serving the greater Valley region.

The $3,000-and-under Community Grants process, previously known as Valley Small Grants, is one of the many grants programs offered by VCF.

Sharon Closius, VCF president and CEO, said the smaller grants will assist “a wide variety of projects” in the philanthropic organization’s service area of Shelton, Ansonia, Derby, Oxford and Seymour.

One program being assisted by a VCF community grant is the Read and Grow: 1,000 Books before Kindergarten initiative, which supports the cost of books, puzzles, games and book bags for 100 Shelton children to help and encourage their families to read 1,000 books to them before they enter kindergarten.

During this year, VCF plans to distribute a total of $665,000 in grant funds to local organizations. Learn more about the foundation, established in 2004, at valleyfoundation.org.
