UPDATE, 2:29 p.m. —  A youth was taken to the hospital with what were described as minor head lacerations after boat literally came apart on the water Monday.

According to witnesses, the boat was out on the Housatonic River about three miles upstream of Indian Well State Park when the transom – where the outboard motor mounts to the boat, ripped away due to rot and corrosion.

“The back of the boat broke off and it caused the whole boat to spin around in the water,” said a witness who lives on Birch Bank Road.

The boat owner jumped into the water and swam the boat to shore, where other residents helped him tie to a dock.

In statements to police and state officials, the owner said he had purchased the used boat and had only used it three times before today.

Around 11:45 this morning, an accident was reported on the Housatonic River, near Indian Well State Park in Shelton. Emergency crews from Shelton and Derby have been dispatched to the scene.

According to radio reports, a witness said a child was on the boat, and had injuries.

We will post updates as information is available.
