Golf classic to benefit Bridgeport Hospital

Committee organizing the event is chair by Shelton resident

The 33rd annual Coca-Cola Kaulbach Memorial Golf Classic will take place at Brooklawn Country Club on Thursday, Sept. 12. Proceeds will support patient care and support services provided by Bridgeport Hospital’s Norma F. Pfriem Cancer Institute.

The chairman of the Coca-Cola Kaulbach Golf Committee is Ed Santa of Shelton.

“It’s a great day of golf, on a renowned golf course, all to support cancer patients from throughout the area and their families — no matter how many birdies or bogeys you end up with,” said Steve Jakab, president of the Bridgeport Hospital Foundation, which organizes the event with the Coca-Cola Kaulbach Golf Committee.

Already one of the longest-running charity golf tournaments in Connecticut, the Coca-Cola Kaulbach Classic is the legacy of its founder, Ernie Kaulbach, an avid golfer, businessman and philanthropist, who died of cancer in 1996.

About the classic

Since 2000, the classic has raised more than $1 million to support cancer services at Bridgeport Hospital. Recently, proceeds have funded replacement of all cancer institute inpatient beds with state-of-the-art models, the Celebrate Life and Moving Forward cancer survivor events, expansion of genetic counseling services, the Oncology Chaplaincy Program and nursing education.

The classic begins with registration and a gourmet brunch at 9:30 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 11:15. Cocktail hour begins at 4:30 p.m., with dinner and an awards ceremony immediately following. The ceremony will include a raffle and a live auction.

Play is limited to 120 golfers. The $500 entry fee ($170 of which is tax deductible) includes all meals, cocktails, greens fees, golf cart, full locker facilities, par three prizes for amateurs and special commemorative gifts.

Joining Santa on the Coca-Cola Kaulbach Golf Committee are Christina Bodine of Fairfield; Ted D’Eramo and Mike Marcinek, both of Seymour; former Fairfield resident Austin Felis, who now lives in Manchester, Vt.; Dave Galla, Joe Haley and Norma F. Pfriem Cancer Institute Co-Medical Director Dr. Scott Thornton, all of Trumbull; Marc Campano of Stratford; Brian Curry of East Hartford; and Brad Worthington of Easton. Also on the committee is Paul Fitzgerald, representing title sponsor Coca-Cola Refreshments.
