Beechwood Market in Huntington Center appears to have closed after 90 years in business. The entrance was shut and the shelves were bare on Monday at the neighborhood food market, located at 40 Huntington St. on the Green for more than a half century.
The store was a longtime mainstay in the Shelton business community, with many local residents having fond memories of making shopping trips to the small supermarket.
It was an independently owned establishment, being operated by the Scanlon family since the mid-1980s, according to previous articles on the store.
The owner, Kevin Scanlon, politely said he preferred not to comment on Monday evening.
Moved to Shelton in late ’50s
Beechwood originally was located in Bridgeport, one of many neighborhood food markets that once were in that nearby large city, according to previous articles. It was established in 1923 and then moved to Shelton in the late 1950s, where it was in the Huntington Shopping Plaza.
During its many years in Huntington Center, residents would visit the store to purchase everything from meat to produce, and dairy products to baked goods. It was a particularly convenient place for people living nearby to pick up staples, such as milk, bread and orange juice.
The store’s interior had been redesigned a few years ago, giving the market more of a country feel, according to previous reports.
