Funeral services will take place Tuesday for a longtime volunteer Shelton firefighter, with the wake on Monday.
Matthew J. Skurat, 72, of Shelton, died suddenly and unexpectedly on Sept. 4 while vacationing in Cape Cod, Mass.
“Matti” Skurat served the Shelton Fire Department and Echo Hose Hook & Ladder Fire Co. No. 1 for more than 50 years.
He was secretary of the Echo Hose Co. for 49 years and was chaplain for Pine Rock Park Fire Co. No. 4.
“He always had Echo Hose in his heart and would do anything for the company,” according to the Echo Hose Co. website. ““Even though Matti was not fighting fires like the old days, his support function within the company will be irreplaceable. Matti will be missed by all.”
Wake and service
The wake will take place Monday, Sept. 9 from 3-7 p.m. at Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road, Shelton.
On Tuesday, Sept. 10, his funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Margaret Mary Church, Shelton.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Donna Tripp Skurat; his mother, Helen Churma Skurat of Shelton; his daughters, Karen and her husband James Oram, Gretchen and her husband Stephen Gifford, and his son Christopher and his wife Carla Skurat; and grandchildren, Danielle Gifford and Jake and Ryan Skura.
He was predeceased by his father Matthew Skurat, sister Nancy Skurat Wannagot, and brother-in-law Daniel Wannagot.
