There have been six pet food recalls in the United States since March, according to the Food and Drug Administration’s website. From the Northeast to the West Coast, numerous brands have been affected.
Veterinarians from BluePearl Veterinary Partners want people to ensure the food they are feeding their pets is safe.
“We want to make sure that people are aware of these recalls and taking the information seriously,” said Dr. Neil Shaw, chief medical officer of BluePearl Veterinary Partners. “One of the ways we intend to help is by educating the public and encouraging people to talk with their family veterinarians about the most recent recalls.”
Human handing of pet food
In all of the recent recalled products, salmonella was the present factor responsible for the recalls. Salmonella in contaminated products doesn’t just affect animal health. It presents a health risk to humans who handle contaminated pet products.
This is especially true if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.
Common symptoms of salmonella in pets include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, lethargy, fever and abdominal discomfort.
“More importantly, any time you notice a medical problem or a significant change in your pet’s behavior, you should take him or her to your family veterinarian or nearest emergency veterinary hospital as soon as possible,” Shaw said.
