A gunman, who previously served in the U.S. Navy and then appears to have worked as a civilian contractor, killed 12 people today at the military facility. The shooter also died during the incident. Many others were injured.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has directed the flags be put at half-staff in response to a proclamation issued this evening by President Barack Obama.

“Our hearts go out to everyone who was affected by this morning’s shooting at the Washington Navy Yard,” Malloy said. “On behalf of the people of Connecticut, we offer our deepest condolences and will keep the victims of this senseless tragedy in our thoughts and prayers.”
