Section of I-84 being closed during weekend for construction

A section of Interstate 84 westbound in Danbury, near the New York state line, will be closed for construction work for part of this weekend, according to the Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT).

Construction-signInterstate 84 west will be closed at Exit 1 in Danbury from 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21 through Sunday, Sept. 22, with all traffic detoured onto Route 6/202 at Exit 1 in Connecticut.

Motorists are cautioned that extensive delays may occur along I-84 and the detour roadways that include Route 6/202, DOT officials said. The westbound closure is expected to significantly impact streets in the city of Danbury, especially near Exits 1 and 2.

Lane closures and traffic control will begin at 3:30 p.m. on I-84, Route 6/202, and some of the local roads in preparation for the full closure of I-84 west at 5 p.m.

A still camera has been set up on-site to capture the construction process. Visit Earthcam for the camera or watch the time-lapse video.

Bridges across border being replaced

The New York Department of Transportation is replacing two bridges carrying I-84 westbound and eastbound over Dingle Ridge Road in the town of Southeast in Putnam County.

The work is being accelerated to minimize traffic impacts, but will require the interstate to be closed in that area during two weekends.

The I-84 eastbound closure is currently scheduled for Oct. 19 and 20. On these dates, I-84 will be closed at Exit 20 in the town of Southeast, N.Y. Traffic will be detoured onto Route 6 in New York state and returned to I-84 at Exit 1 in Danbury.

For bridge project information go to New York state’s project web page at www.dot.ny.gov/nyi84ct .

Consider alternative routes

Depending on the origin of your trip and your final destination, it may be appropriate to avoid using I-84 altogether.

Travelers with origins north of the work may choose Interstate 90 for their east-west travel, while motorists with origins south of the work may choose Interstates 95 or 287.

Route 58 in Bethel being closed

Also in the coming days, Route 58 (Putnam Park Road) in Bethel will be closed for replacement of the bridge over the Putnam Brook from 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20 to 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

The Route 58 bridge over the brook near the intersection of Sara’s Way will be removed and replaced requiring the closure. The work includes the removal of the existing stone masonry culvert and installation of a precast concrete box culvert and wing walls, along with new drainage and pavement.

Both northbound and southbound lanes of Route 58 will be closed between Hoyts Hill Road and Sara’s Way.

Motorists will be detoured from Putnam Park Road (Route 58) at Milwaukee Avenue (Route 302) onto Glassy Plain Road/Redding Road (Route 53) to Hill Road/Lonetown Road (Route 107) and back onto Putnam Park Road (Route 58). Detour signs will direct motorists around the closure.
