Volunteers needed to read a book to classrooms on Oct. 17

The School Volunteer Association of Bridgeport (SVA) is seeking more than 600 volunteers from Shelton and other towns to read a book to every pre-kindergarten through sixth grade class in the Bridgeport public schools on Read Aloud Day.

The annual event will take place this year on Thursday, Oct. 17 from 9-10 a.m. Register by calling SVA at 203-275-1120 or go to svabridgeport.org for more information.

This is an opportunity for people from greater Bridgeport towns to share the joy of reading with Bridgeport youngsters.

Books will be provided by SVA

SVA will provide the children’s books for volunteers to read and then donate to the classroom libraries. Some readers will reveal how author Mark Teague’s characters in “The Three Little Pigs And The Somewhat Bad Wolf” discover how to enjoy potato chips and “sody-pop” together.

Other readers will share the true story of “Goliath,” the fire house horse who is the hero of the great Baltimore fire of 1904. The author, Claudia Friddell, will be in Bridgeport to read her own book to a fifth grade class.

Read Aloud Day 2013 sponsors include AltruShare Securities, Bigelow Tea, Capital Power (Bridgeport Energy), Estate of Ruth Krauss, Fairfield University, Gexpro, NewCity Foundation, People’s United Bank and the United Way of Coastal Fairfield County.
