Football: Gaels tame Lions

Shelton High’s Peter Hoff, Kyle Drost and Wadson Petithomme intercepted passes to slow the high-flying Foran High attack, and quarterback Mark Piccirillo ran for three touchdowns, when coach Jeff Roy’s Gaels defeated the Lions, 35-13, in an SCC football battle in Milford on Friday night.

Shelton (4-0) scored a pair of second-quarter touchdowns to take a 21-7 lead into the half.

Jason Thompson blocked a punt and Troy Vasilescu recovered the ball in the end zone for a 14-7 lead with 5:04 remaining in the second period.

Shelton got the ball back with 2:55 left before the break, and went 63 yards in 10 plays, with Piccirillo scoring from a yard out with 12 seconds on the clock for a two-touchdown lead.

Petithomme’s interception on the Gaels’ 5-yard line stopped the Lions opening drive of the third quarter.

Two possessions later, Michael Pingree took a jet sweep around a Mike Ortoli block for 25 yards and a touchdown.

Joe Zoppi’s fourth of five conversion kicks made it 28-7 with 5:06 left in the third.

Piccirillo’s four-yard run gave Shelton a 35-7 lead with 4:52 remaining.

Foran (2-2) closed the scoring with 3:14 remaining on a Jake Kasuba to Connor Cadrin touchdown pass.
