Shelton Mayor Lauretti gets his stolen car back

A vehicle stolen from Mayor Mark Lauretti’s driveway in July has been recovered and returned.

The 2001 Mercedes Benz recently was found in New Haven with only limited damage. “There were some dents,” Lauretti said.

The car belongs to Lauretti personally. He said about 10 years ago, he purchased the vehicle in used condition with about 20,000 miles on it. “I don’t use it much,” he said.

Lauretti also has a city-provided Buick LaCrosse, which is the car he usually can be seen in when driving around town.

Car was missing in the morning

Shelton police said the mayor reported the car stolen from his David Drive home on the morning of Thursday, July 25.

Lauretti said when he walked outside in the morning, he noticed the vehicle was missing. “It felt awful,” he said of being the victim of a crime.

He contacted the Shelton Police Department and a report was taken.

Lauretti has four children college-aged or older, so a number of vehicles are kept at his residence and they don’t all fit inside the family home’s garage.

Found on private property

Recently, about three months after the theft incident, the New Haven police found the stolen car on private property in the Elm City, Lauretti said.

No arrests have been made yet in the case yet but that is likely to change.

“It’s nice to know they were able to locate the perpetrators,” Lauretti said. “That is one way to deter the deviants of society.”
