New sidewalks going in on Shelton’s Canal Street

Concrete is poured to build a new sidewalk on Canal Street on Wednesday morning. New sidewalks with granite curbing are being built across from the Avalon apartment complex and the Birmingham condo building in downtown Shelton. (Photo by Brad Durrell)

The road in that same area is being rebuilt and will be repaved, and the utility lines are being placed underground.

The improvements are part of the city’s ongoing efforts to revitalize Canal Street, an old industrial road that runs along the Housatonic River. It is hoped the public improvements will spur additional private development.
