Tony Award-winning singer, Broadway conductor to perform Sunday in Shelton

Hear well-known tunes from ‘Cats,’ ‘Fiddler on the Roof,’ ‘West Side Story’ and other musicals

The New Haven Symphony Orchestra will perform songs from “The Great American Songbook” on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 3 p.m. at Shelton Intermediate School, 675 Constitution Blvd. North, Shelton.

The concert with Tony Award-winning actress and singer Debbie Gravitte and Broadway conductor Todd Ellison helps begin the NHSO’s 2013-14 pops season.

The performance will include songs from many well-known Broadway shows, such as “Cabaret,” “Cats,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Gypsy” and “West Side Story.”

The two-hour musical program is:

— Overture from “Gypsy”

— “Let Me Entertain You” from “Gypsy”

— “Don’t Rain on My Parade” from “Funny Girl”

— “Mr. Monotony” from “Jerome Robbin’s Broadway”

— “I Got Rhythm” from “Girl Crazy”

— Selections from “Fiddler on the Roof”

Intermission

— Selections from “West Side Story”

— “All That Jazz” from “Chicago”

— “Maybe This Time” from “Cabaret”

— Selections from “A Chorus Line”

— “Defying Gravity” from “Wicked”

— “Memory” from “Cats”

 

Performer backgrounds, ticket information

As a vocalist, Debbie Gravitte has performed in “Chicago,” “Jerome Robbin’s Broadway” and “Les Miserables.” Todd Ellison has been music director for Broadway’s recent “Annie,” “La Cage aux Folles” and “Spamalot” as well as the “Radio City Christmas Spectacular.”

Tickets to the Shelton concert are $35 and $45 for adults, with some free for children. Parking is free. Go to newhavensymphony.org for ticket information.

The concert is being presented through the support of Shelton Pops Series sponsor R.D. Scinto Inc., and season media sponsor The New Haven Register.

 

Next symphony show in Shelton

The next New Haven Symphony Orchestra performance in Shelton will be “Holiday Extravaganza: A Mensch’s Christmas” at Shelton Intermediate on Sunday, Dec. 15 at 3 p.m.

Songs by Jewish composers Irving Berlin, Sammy Cahn, Johnny Marks, Jules Stine and others will be performed. Tickets also are $35 and $45.
