A husband-and-wife doctor team have opened a medical office together in Shelton.
Dr. Nami Bayan, an internist, and his wife, Dr. Ladan Hamd, a psychiatrist, will operate H&B Quality Medical Care at the Ivy Brook Medical Center, 2 Ivy Brook Road.
The couple had been practicing in upstate Connecticut. He had an office in Middletown and most recently was affiliated with St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. She had an office in Plainville and has worked at various facilities, including the UConn Health Center in Farmington.
Their goal was to open a practice together closer to New York City, and they chose Shelton based on location, demographics and other factors.
While moving to a new area can be a challenge, Bayan said he and his wife are known within the medical community. “A lot of people know us,” he said.
Opportunities in Shelton
On Wednesday, a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at the medical office. The couple was joined by Mayor Mark Lauretti, Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce President Bill Purcell and invited guests.
Lauretti said Shelton is a great place to work and run a business, and it’s part of the city’s “strategy and philosophy” to be a welcoming place for the private sector.
“I think you’ll find opportunities here,” the mayor told Bayan and Hamd.
Purcell said H&B Quality Medical Care will be a place to serve the continual health needs of “your body and soul.”
The new combined practice, Purcell said, is part of “a wonderful healthcare cluster” in this region that includes hospitals, medical care offices, healthcare insurance companies, pharmaceutical firms, medical manufacturers and other related businesses.
Met while attending college
Bayan and Hamd grew up in Iran, and met while both were attending the University of Tehran. They came to the United States in 2000.
He is an internist and primary care physician. She is a psychiatrist serving children, adolescents and adults.
Hamd said their approach to medicine was partly shaped when she faced a medical condition of her own.
“It really changed our approach on how we treat patients,” she said, noting the experience helped them better understand the importance on focusing on the patient’s perspective.
Sharing a vision
Lana Aferzon, who manages the Ivy Brook Medical Center, said H&B Quality Medical Care is a welcome addition.
“We are thrilled to have them here,” Aferzon said during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “They share the vision we’ve always had for this building to offer access to all kinds of doctors and medical care.”
“I’ve seen how they interact with their patients, and how motivated they are,” Aferzon said.
Aferzon’s husband, Dr. Mark Aferzon, has his ear, nose and throat medical practice in the building. The Aferzons are partners in the entity that built and owns the facility.
The Ivy Brook Medical Center on Ivy Brook Road is just off Constitution Boulevard South.
