Crawford questions role of aldermanic Finance Committee

Board of Aldermen candidate Judson Crawford is questioning why the aldermanic Finance Committee has canceled so many meetings this year.

Crawford, a Democrat running in the Third Ward, said eight committee meetings have been canceled while three have taken place in 2013.

“Is the Finance Committee reviewing the monthly check register, asking questions and then voting to approve?” asked Crawford, adding the Board of Education has a Finance Committee that meets regularly to review school budgetary matters.

Crawford said by charter, the Board of Aldermen acts “as the financial authority of the city” and the Finance Committee is supposed to serve as auditors on behalf of the aldermen.
