Construction equipment began forming a linear path in the ground that will be used for a brick walkway, similar to the first Riverwalk phase in Veterans Memorial Park (or the area often called “The Slab”).
The new Riverwalk section — known as Phase Two — will start between the Birmingham and Avalon buildings, and then go behind the Avalon complex along the Housatonic River. In the future, the walkway should be extended farther north on Canal Street toward the dam.
Phase Two will not directly connect to the earlier phase.
Plans calls for Phase Two to be mostly completed by the end of the year, depending on weather, with much of the landscaping done next spring, after the winter weather ends.
Phase Two will be about 900 linear feet long and about 10 feet wide in most places. The existing section in Veterans Memorial Park is up to 12 feet wide.
The Riverwalk has become a popular place for people to stroll in the downtown area, offering views of the Housatonic River and Derby’s central business district.
