Huge impact in the community

“Municipal elections usually have lower turnout figures than state or presidential elections, even though the impact of the decisions made by those elected to local government is huge in the community,” said Secretary of the State Denise Merrill, who serves as Connecticut’s chief elections official.

A number of factors can impact voter turnout, such as the perceived competitiveness of the races and the offices up for election (it was an off-year for some towns and cities with four-term terms for mayors and first selectmen, for instance, but there still were races for lower-profile elected positions in those communities).
