Crews have spent months preparing the street for new asphalt by rebuilding the road’s subsurface, putting utility lines underground, constructing sidewalks and installing granite curbs.
As an old industrial area first developed in the late 1800s, many challenges arose with the underground infrastructure during the process.
In the late 1800s, the area had a series of canals and was filled with large factories that made products shipped around the world. The factories were powered by the Ousatonic Dam on the Housatonic River, still in existence today at the end of Canal Street.
This section of Canal Street now is being redeveloped, with two residential projects completed (Avalon Shelton apartments and the Birmingham condos). City officials hope that investing in public infrastructure improvements will lead to new projects by private developers.
