The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) will open a branch office in Bridgeport on Friday, Nov. 22.
All of Connecticut is now served by an SBA district office in Hartford. The new site will be located in the Brien McMahon Federal Building at 915 Lafayette Blvd., which is the same building that houses the federal courthouse.
Bernard Sweeney, SBA district director, said a Bridgeport office will allow the federal agency “to bring greater awareness and delivery of its services and products to entrepreneurs in the both Fairfield and New Haven counties.” The service area will include Shelton.
The SBA focuses on helping entrepreneurs and small business owners grow and create jobs by providing greater access to capital, counseling, federal contracting opportunities, and disaster assistance.
The agency, which has 3,000 employees nationwide, also sponsors business education activities.
Works with resource partners
In Bridgeport, the SBA is partnering with local resource partners — the city of Bridgeport, SCORE, Women’s Business Development Center offices in Shelton and Stamford, as well as the Small Business Development Center — to expand resources available to small businesses such as technical assistance, one-on-one counseling and financial support.
An event to officially open the Bridgeport office will take place on Nov. 22. Invited speakers at the event are U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, U.S. Rep. Jim Himes (whose district includes most of Shelton), Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch, SBA Regional Administrator Seth Goodall, and SBA Connecticut District Director Bernard M. Sweeney.
