Letter: Become informed on the benefits of Obamacare

To the Editor:

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), or Obamacare, became law in 2010, but after three years misunderstanding still exists about the law’s health benefits and the enormous difference they can make.

To help, AARP created an easy-to-use online tool called www.HealthLawAnswers.org that gives you a personalized report about how the law will affect you.

Obamacare helps reduce the number of people who are uninsured through a Medicaid expansion in states that decide to expand their programs (Connecticut did), and the creation of a health insurance marketplace with money available to help lower- and moderate-income individuals pay for coverage.

Enrollment in Connecticut’s marketplace, Access Health CT, opened Oct. 1, with coverage starting in 2014.

The law also allows parents who have health insurance to keep their adult children on their family policy until they turn age 26. Good news for young adults, who have the highest rate of unemployment of any age group, especially African American young men.

I encourage everyone to take the time to get informed and gain the benefits. Let the law work for you.
