A husband and wife have opened a restaurant featuring modern Asian cuisine in the Shelton Square shopping center, which includes Stop & Shop.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place Monday at Red Lotus, owned by Larry Wang and his wife, Nia Chen. “We love this community,” Wang said.

Mayor Mark Lauretti and Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce President Bill Purcell joined the couple and other guests at the ribbon-cutting.

The couple previously owned a restaurant on Long Island, and opened Red Lotus two weeks ago.

Red Lotus is at 872 Bridgeport Ave. in space previously occupied by Happy Family restaurant. The interior has been totally renovated and now has a modern look and includes a small bar. The interior was gutted and all the equipment was upgraded.

“It was an eight-month labor of love for the couple to renovate the restaurant,” according to publicity material.

‘Knew it had possibilities’

Wang and Chen had been living in New York City but recently moved to Shelton. They picked Shelton to live and open a business in after seeing that the community was named the most affordable place to live in Connecticut in a Bloomberg News article.

Owners Nia Chen and Larry Wang previously operated a restaurant in Huntington, Long Island.

They then noticed an ad from the previous restaurant owner, who was selling the business. “They came to see the venue and knew it had possibilities,” according to publicity material.

Wang and Chen “look forward to the community visiting their restaurant and their greatest hope is that it will be another generational restaurant proudly serving the Shelton community for decades to come,” the couple said.

Red Lotus will be open Tuesday to Saturday from 11:30 a.m.-10 p.m., and Sunday from 1-9 p.m. Lunch is served six days a week from 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m.

The menu includes many classic and favorite dishes from Asia as well as a sushi bar. The chefs will cook to order.

The menu is available online at www.redlotusct.com or on Facebook at “Red Lotus Shelton.” The restaurant’s phone number is 203-926-8725.
