Shelton bank robbery: Suspect claimed to have bomb

A bank robbery was reported in Shelton at about 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 30. According to reports, the Webster Bank branch on Bridgeport Avenue was approached by a man who claimed to have an explosive device.

Police Chief Joel Hurliman said the suspect handed a bank employee a note, but the chief couldn’t provide other details at this time.

Shelton police make arrest in Monday bank robbery

The suspect is described as a light-skinned Hispanic male with straight, ear-length hair and a goatee. He was wearing a two-toned windbreaker, running pants or jeans, and white sneakers.

Suspect’s car is described as a silver Nissan with New Jersey plates, last seen southbound on Bridgeport Avenue near exit 12 of Route 8.

As is traditional in bank robberies, Hurliman said the Shelton police immediately contacted state and federal officials and now is working with law enforcement agencies from the state and federal government levels.

Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to call the Shelton Police Department’s Detective Bureau at 203-924-1544, ext. 330. Calls will be kept confidential.

 

Second bank robbery in December

This is the second bank robbery in Shelton in the past three weeks. On the morning of Dec. 10, two masked men armed with guns robbed the Wells Fargo Bank branch on Coram Avenue downtown.

The two suspects, described as being black males, displayed weapons but did not use them. They fled on foot and have yet to be arrested.

The Wells Fargo Bank suspects got away with an undetermined amount of cash. A reward has been offered for information in that case.
